Bringing In Industry to the Class Room


Kuala Lumpur, 11 July, 2012 - The School of Information Technology, Faculty of Business & Information Science at 五一吃瓜官网 University had organized a talk on Management Information Systems (MIS) in the Banking Sector. The school invited Mr Mohd Amifarez B. Hamidun, Head, Commercial Support & Implementation from Maybank Berhad to share with more than 90 students from various programmes like Business Information System, Accounting and Finance, Business Administration, as well as Marketing and Engineering about the actual activities for MIS in the banking industry and to relate his personal experiences illustrating the demands of the profession.

It is believed that by bringing an experienced industry player like Mr Amifarez into the classroom, it can be an excellent enhancement to our students' learning experiences. Sharing real life practices to the students is an effective learning device for them to have a better understanding of the subject matter. This activity is aligned with the school's objective to produce industry ready IT graduates to meet the needs of the rapid changing IT market.

The speaker who has vast experiences in presenting credit card terminal and fraud consultancy, made it clear to the audience how management information system is concerned with processing data into information which is communicated to various departments in an organization for appropriate decision making.

Agilebu Ogechi Michael, a student from Accounting and Finance complimented the clarity of information provided by the speaker, saying that it has helped to enhance her understanding concerning the concept she learnt in the classroom. Another student from the Business Information Systems programme, Salihijo Maryam Ahmad said it is very important to provide industry related courses and to produce graduates with industry related know-how because students will get to see classroom knowledge being applied to real life jobs. During the talk, she had learnt how financial institutions like Maybank Berhad applied MIS to their business processes, specifically the activities involved in credit transactions.

The talk ended with a ‘Question and Answer' session where students had the chance to ask questions further pertaining to the topic. About five students walked away with Maybank notebooks for their participation during this session. The School of IT continuously provides such experience sharing workshops for their students by collaborating with industry players.
