6TH NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INTEGRITY AT 五一吃瓜官网 UNIVERSITY

Kuala Lumpur, 16 September, 2011 - The Malaysia Institute for Development and Asian Studies (MiDAS) under 五一吃瓜官网 University, together with the Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) and the Malaysian Association of Facilitators (MAFa) led the 6th National Conference on Integrity (NCOI) during the country’s Malaysia Day. Themed “Against Bribery and Corruption for Malaysians”, the ultimate goal for this year’s NCOI was to create and facilitate a movement for change in Malaysia to have a greater awareness on how to combat corruption.

The Conference which featured leaders from various faiths and representatives of several NGOs, included a welcome address by En. Anis Yusal Tusoff, a member of the MACC (Malaysian Anti Corruption Comission) Advisory Panel. In his speech, En. Anis thanked the many individuals who have taken the time to come to the event although it was a public holiday. He also corrected the misconception that corruption is a problem which does not involve members of the public.

”To some people, corruption is often seen as being too big and too complicated an issue to be discussed and dissected, especially in the context of a forum or a meeting with a limited time-frame, resources and expertise. This does not mean that interested citizens and groups who want to play their part in tackling this issue within the context of Malaysia should not try to find a common ground in understanding this issue,” he said.

Evidence to this statement is the development of the first ever Civil Society Cabinet Paper that was a direct result of the discussions which occurred during the 6th NCOI. Plans are now underway to present the paper to the Cabinet in the near future. To further spark civil action, speakers, moderators as well as participants of the event had all signed the No Corruption Pledge publicly.

The event was organised and hosted by the University’s Faculty of Policy Science (FEPS). The Faculty regularly organizes such events to make meaningful contributions through nurturing the hearts and minds of policy-oriented individuals.
