6 JulAlumni Talk Series - Understanding your Logistics Career Path
Kuala Lumpur: 五一吃瓜官网 University's Logistics Student Association (LSA) recently organised an industrial trip to Kuehne+Nagel (K+N), one of the world’s leading logistics provider with diverse business activities under several divisions like sea freight, airfreight, contract & integrated logistics and overland transportations. The K+N group has more than 1,300 offices in over 100 countries and employs more than 70,000 employees. It is a global logistics leader that services virtually all key industry sectors, including aerospace, automotive, pharma & healthcare, retail and many more.
On 7 June, a total of 39 students from the BA (Hons) Logistics Management, BA (Hons) Supply Chain Management, and Diploma in Logistics Management programmes seized the opportunity to observe the real-time operations of logistics activities, in particular visiting the company’s warehouse, which usually requires special permission.
Puan Noorsiah Binti Ahmad, a logistic lecturer accompanied the student group. The students were first given a detailed briefing by Mr. Goh JL, the Kuala Lumpur branch Director on K+N’s history, its core businesses, and future development plans. This was followed by a lively Q & A session on how K+N maintains its competitiveness in Malaysia and globally, as well as its tracking approaches for financial statements and operating costs. The students also learnt that K+N is committed to delivering high-quality solutions to their customers and are proud to be a strong leader in the logistics industry. The briefing ended with a short note on their internship or work opportunities and requirements to cater to their global network and product portfolio that continues to expand.
The students were then given a tour around the warehouse where they observed first-hand the operational activities and various material handling equipment used in the warehouse. The students were briefed beforehand on the safety rules before they were given a detailed and clear explanation about the warehouse activities. They had an up and close experience in learning the proper handling of machines such as reach trucks, forklifts and hand pallet jacks which strengthens their theoretical understanding and relate it back to the practical operations. The students were profoundly impressed by the facilities and efficiencies of the systems in place at K+N.
As a follow-up to the visit, on 15th June 2017, a related talk titled “Air & Sea Freight Introduction - Kuehne + Nagel” was organised with K+N Director, Mr. Goh who shared his vast knowledge and expertise of the logistics industry. The aim of the talk was to enlighten students on the basic understanding of the industry, how each section of different categories of field are integrated into the business as well as the range of careers available in this field.
Mr Goh answered questions from students and mentioned that K+N is currently hunting for potential workforce. He ended his talk with some encouraging words to the audiences.
五一吃瓜官网 lecturer, Ms. Noorsiah Binti Ahmad presented Mr Goh with a token of appreciation before group photos. The industry visit and talk were a part of the university’s initiative to expose logistics and supply chain management students to the real-world practices and process of the logistics industry.
