SDG Project 2023
Design of Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) at Taman Melawati River Three Park in Collaboration with Alliance of River Three (ART!)
Gross Pollutant Traps (GPTs) are a significant challenge in stormwater management, particularly in flood-prone areas. While the need for managing gross pollutants is well understood, finding effective solutions for diverse and complex catchments remains an ongoing issue. The primary challenge lies in ensuring reliable performance during peak stormwater events while minimising the environmental and economic costs associated with maintenance and pollution downstream. Traditional fixed grate or netting systems often struggle with blockages or dislodgement due to the variable volume and velocity of water entering the drainage system. As a result, the management of trash and pollutants remains inefficient especially in areas with fluctuating water conditions such as Taman Melawati River Three Park. This project aims to design an innovative Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) system that addresses these challenges with emphasis:
- Automated and manual trash removal: A mechanism to collect and transfer debris from the filters into a container, ensuring that water flow is not obstructed and preventing blockages.
- IoT integration (optional): A smart system that monitors the GPT and sends alerts when the filters are full or if there are issues with the drainage system, allowing for timely maintenance.
- Mechanical release system: The grate system will be designed to automatically release based on the mechanical force generated by water flow, enabling the system to adapt to varying conditions.
Relevant SDG Element
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
The primary goal of this project is to prevent trash and pollutants from entering the river, which directly improves water quality and helps manage stormwater runoff. By reducing gross pollutants in water systems, the GPT supports the goal of ensuring clean and safe water for all. Effective stormwater management also contributes to the broader goal of improving sanitation and access to clean water.
