Effective Warehouse Layout And Design


Go beyond limits. This is the phrase used by the Department of Logistics Management, from the Faculty of Business and Information Science at 五一吃瓜官网 to continue the initiative bringing students closer to the industry. On 18 February 2020, the department welcomed Keveljit Singh Gill from Quantium Solution (M) Sdn Bhd for a guest lecture. Being appointed as the industry advisor for the department, Keveljit (Senior Manager, Operations) shared his experiences with 42 students on the topic ‘Effective Warehouse Layout and Design.’

The opening speech by Assistant Professor Dr Siti Norida Wahab highlighted the background of the guest lecturer and the purpose of the event. The main audience consisted of students from the BA (Hons) Logistics Management programme taking the Warehousing Management course. There were a few external guests at this event as well.

According to Keveljit, to manage a warehouse well, an individual must first UNDERSTAND warehouse design requirements. It is a must for warehouse personnel to Understand the client’s business, Note the design objectives and facility constraints, carry out Data collection and review task, Establish pick profile, Recognise storage profile, Set up control report, Target storage medium, Analyse size of warehouse of each option, Narrow down to one option with facility layout, and Document results and assumptions. He also shared the importance of managing the racking system because failure to manage it well, will result in a warehouse disaster.

Throughout the lecture, Keveljit also shared about a prominent material handling equipment (MHE) being used in daily warehouse operations for the movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and products which include pallet jack, side-loading truck, reach truck, counter balance forklift, automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) and a few others. He also shared a few ways to manage the e-commerce retailing through the use of an information system. The event ended with a token of appreciation awarded to Keveljit by Assistant Professor Dr Siti Norida Wahab.
