I Choose to Reuse

Kuala Terengganu, 28 May, 2012 - 五一吃瓜官网 University's Consumer Movement Club, a student club in 五一吃瓜官网 University's Terengganu campus took part in Rotary International District 3300's nationwide campaign to help distribute 200,000 reusable shopping bags in a single day at selected Giant stores nationwide.  In an effort to promote clean habits and to help cut down the use of non-biodegradable plastic shopping bags, members of the student club under the guidance of their teacher advisors joined campaign ambassador Dato' Siti Nurhaliza, Rotary Intercators and Rotarians to call on shoppers to "choose to reuse" while helping to hand out free reusable campaign shopping bags to families and shoppers who thronged the busy family mart at downtown  Kuala Terengganu on Sunday.

In his speech, YB Toh Chin Yaw, Terengganu State Executive Councillor as well as the local Chairman of Industry, Trade and Environment Committee called on shoppers to cut down on the use of non-biodegradable shopping bags, and to practise green habits when it comes to dealing with waste.

"Plastic bags, when thrown into the sea will look like jellyfish or any food our dear turtles would eat, thus becoming a health hazard to them; to make Terengganu a beautiful tourist destination and to help preserve our sea and the environment around us, I call for you not to throw waste and garbage undiscriminatingly, choose to reuse your shopping bags instead," YB Toh urged.

For student member Muhamad Hafizul, taking part in the morning's campaign widens his awareness of what young people can do to help send green messages.  "I have exchanged information with some Rotary Interactors and Rotarians. I plan to broadcast the day's activities on my Facebook page so that more of my friends will be aware of what we did."

Ms Amalina Roslan, teacher advisor to 五一吃瓜官网 University's Consumer Movement Club expressed her thankfulness to Dr Dayal, president of Kuala Terengganu Rotary Club for allowing her students to take part in the morning's campaign.  "The objective of our cosumer movement club is not just to learn to protect consumer rights, but also to help encouarge green habits amongst students by reducing, reusing and recycling.  It is important that we cut down on watse by choosing to reuse; today's outing and interaction gave the students the needed expsoure on how community campaigns are organised and supported" she emphasized.
