Internet of Things (IoT) x Raspberry Pi Workshop

Kuala Lumpur: In accordance to the theme of 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), 五一吃瓜官网 University’s Information Technology Student Association (ITSA) recently organised a Raspberry Pi Workshop with the Director of WDLabs of Western Digital (WD), Mr. Lim Cheng Hee as the speaker at 五一吃瓜官网 University KL Campus.

The workshop was attended by 38 students from Dip. Information Technology, BSc (Hons) Computing, BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems, Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) Mobile Computing and Networking and BSc (Hons) Food Science with Nutrition.

Raspberry Pi is a credit-size microcomputer which was originally founded by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to educate people of all ages on computer, programming and digital making. Essentially, Raspberry Pi is a device which can realise the concept of Internet of Things by interacting with the “outside world” through sensors.

During the workshop, students were first briefed on the 4th Industrial Revolution and the capabilities of Raspberry Pi, followed by a practical “twinning” project-based learning session, where group of two students were given a Raspberry Pi and sets of sensors for making a burglar alarm system. The workshop continued with an idea pitching session, where students pitched their IoT solutions for real life issues using Raspberry Pi.

Internet of Things is a crucial concept in current technology trend, and IoT devices such as Raspberry Pi serves as a firm reminder to all IT students where software and hardware are inseparable.

Application of Raspberry Pi is beneficial, particularly to current or to-be Final Year Project IT students where they can utilise and incorporate this technology into their system innovation.
