Biography

Sayyid Shafiee is a Malaysian composer who received his PhD in composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under the tutelage of Professor Dr Joe Cutler, Dr Sean Clancy and Howard Skempton after a year studying with Professor Dr Kavin Malone at the University of Manchester. He completed his BMus with Professor Dr Tazul Tajuddin at University Teknologi MARA while actively performing in the Malaysian music industry as a saxophonist performing with various local and international artists. 
 

His music has been featured in various festivals throughout the UK, Europe and Asia. He received performances from various festivals including Druskomanija Music Festival (Lithuania), ChinaAsean Music Festival (China), Risuonanze Festival (Italy), Asian Composers League (Philippines), Soundbridge Festival (Malaysia), SNU New Music Festival (Korea) and many other music events. He has worked with various ensembles and artists including Quatour Danel, Psappha Ensemble, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Le Page Ensemble, and Malaysia Youth Symphony Orchestra, to name a few. 

 
His experience in teaching includes conducting music classes and providing academic advice to various levels of learners, providing music consultation and supervision for postgraduate research students, as well to facilitate the educational framework driven by the university. He also managed to establish a new programme when he was appointed as programme director and worked closely across all university departments. This includes monitoring the quality of the content and managing the academic and professional teams. 

 
Appointed as Panel of Assessors of the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) in the field of music, his responsibility includes evaluating academic accreditation and assessing academic programmes. His appointment as a judge includes Short+Sweet Festival and BOH Cameronian Arts Award for the music category. 

 
Besides teaching, he was also appointed as Honorary Secretary for the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers. He hosted the 4th Soundbridge Festival as a co-director involving more than 60 international musicians and composers that showcased over 40 new musical works. Enthusiastic toward music education and performing arts, his future career also involves cross-media discipline and its contributions to contemporary music development in Malaysia.
