SDG Project 2022
Design of Mechanism of Rotatable Bridge Above the River for Taman Melawati River Three (TMR3) Park
Established in 2019, the Taman Melawati River Three (TMR3) site was created to tackle pollution in the river and protect the surrounding environment. This initiative focuses on reducing plastic waste and debris from stormwater runoff with the goal of restoring the river ecosystem's health and vitality. The TMR3 site is currently being transformed into a placemaking space known as River Three. Placemaking is a community-centred approach that empowers people to reimagine and enhance public spaces.
At the heart of TMR3 is the TMR3 River Care Centre which leads several impactful programmes aimed at involving the local community and improving the river's health. A key aspect of the TMR3 development is the creation of a sustainable crossing over the river. As part of the ongoing eight-kilometre expansion of the Taman Melawati River Three Park, the challenge is to design a Rotatable Bridge that allows for safe and efficient passage across the river while complementing the park's overall vision.
In light of this, students are tasked with designing an innovative bridge that meets the following criteria:
- Safety and structural integrity
- Cost-effectiveness and use of lightweight materials
- Environmental sustainability including flood prevention
- Manual and automatic operation capabilities
- Maximising capacity for pedestrian traffic
