SDG Project 2021
Design of Integrated Dripping Irrigation System Utilising Rainwater Harvesting for Mid Valley River Three (MVR3) Site
Mid Valley River Three (MVR3) was established in 2019 to clean the area around the river and protect the environment from pollution caused by stormwater drains, plastics and natural waste. The site is currently being transformed into a community urban garden that will house various plants. However, the process of watering the large area is challenging due to the geographical contours of the land and limited water and power supply.
To address this issue, students are required to design a complete model of a drip irrigation system for plant watering, along with a rainwater harvesting system for daily use. The goal of this project is to develop an innovative water dripping system that is not found in any existing studies and to install this system at the MVR3 site. Students must consider safety measures, lightweight materials, low costs and environmental impacts in their designs. Particular emphasis should be placed on the limitations of water supply and the required mass flow rate to ensure even distribution of water based on the geographical structure and size of the land. Additionally, the water dripping system must be operable both manually and automatically.
Relevant SDG Elements
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
This goal focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Designing an innovative rainwater harvesting system and efficient watering system addresses water conservation and management which is crucial for the garden's sustainability.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
This goal promotes inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable urban environments. Transforming the area around the Mid Valley River into a community urban garden contributes to urban greening and enhances community well-being.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
This goal encourages sustainable practices and resource management. The emphasis on low-cost, lightweight materials and environmentally friendly design solutions aligns with promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns.
