19 JanA LEARNING EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Kuala Lumpur, 19 January 2010 - 五一吃瓜官网 University recently held their Clubs Day, in conjunction with the recent intake of students. The Clubs Day, held every semester after student orientation, is a two-day event held in both the North and South Wings of the Kuala Lumpur campus, to introduce new students to clubs, societies and student associations, to help integrate them into their new campus life.
According to Student Council Vice-President, Jessie Lim Yu Min, the Clubs Day give an opportunity for clubs and student associations to promote themselves to the campus community. “Not only do they get to recruit new members, but they are also able to showcase their past events and awards to the University community,” she says. New students are also able to choose membership into a wide variety of clubs and associations, depending on their hobbies or favourite activities.
Jessie Lim also says that joining clubs provides students with a holistic approach towards education. “Students are encouraged to not only excel in their academics, but also in extra-curricular activities, which develop leadership skills.” According to the Student Council Vice-President, by joining clubs and student associations, students are also able to tap into their hidden talents, and be able to work as a team.
The University takes seriously the need for students to gain experience, and learn from out-of- the traditional classroom. The University’s Centre for Learning Excellence, together with the Student Affairs Office, is collaborating to implement a new course called the Extracurricular Learning Experience. The course aims to give students experiential learning, enabling them to gain pertinent soft skills, articulate ideas, develop strategic planning and evaluation skills, all of which are important for life after the University. The course allows students to accumulate points throughout 3 semesters, based their membership in clubs, societies or associations, and their participation in events.
Meanwhile, the Student Council aims to organise more events to involve the University community. Their activities lined up for 2010 include Prom Night, the second installment of 五一吃瓜官网’s Got Talent, Intra and Inter-Faculty Sports Tournament, Fiesta Numero Uno, which combines a flea market, fashion show and street carnival all in one, and the Sports Carnival, which is running currently.
