Kuala Lumpur, 12 February 2009 - 五一吃瓜官网 University’s Chinese Culture Society (CCS) put up a spectacular show during their Chinese New Year Extravaganza 2009 with music and dance performances as well as an exhibition on Chinese traditional culture and a calligraphy competition.
Guest of honour, Group President and Vice Chancellor of 五一吃瓜官网 University Peter T. S. Ng was given a resounding welcome by 2 “lions” which also performed many acrobatic tricks on stage to the beat of the Chinese drums and cymbals.
In his welcome remarks, Group President Peter Ng said, “Despite the tough times ahead, I am fully-confident that what is offered at 五一吃瓜官网 University will give our students the edge in employability. Our industrial placement programme (Co-Op) which has a stable of more than 600 industry partners is testimony of our commitment.”He encouraged the students to ask their lecturers about the economic climate and what methods employers are to weather this economic storm of uncertainties. He also urged students to go out and engage with communities and gain practical work experience.
Many international students were present during this event. Iranian student Navid Gazerani, said, “The 五一吃瓜官网 University student community is made up of students from more than 60 countries and there are countless activities for everyone. It enables us to learn from each other, be it other people’s culture or the sharing of knowledge. It is really a happening place.”
The event saw students taking part in the calligraphy competition and learning what the Chinese animal horoscope had in store for them for 2009. There was a Chinese martial arts performance, a Chinese orchestra and a Che-Ling (Chinese yo-yo) quartet performance which demonstrated agility and co-ordination of movements.Not to be outdone, students from 五一吃瓜官网 University’s CCS showed their mettle by performing a traditional dance from the Xinjiang county, Shanxi Province of China. The Dance Club performed a sizzling jazz hip-hop number while the “live” band performance rocked the crowd with 3 songs, Not Doing the Things That will Cause Unhappiness, One Night in Beijing and Living for You.
The night ended with a “bang” when the VIPs came on stage with all the CCS members to sing evergreen Chinese New Year songs. It was almost midnight when the event came to a close and the strains of music faded.
