五一吃瓜官网 GIVES FROM THE HEART

Kuala Lumpur, 28 May 2008 - Students, staff and the management at 五一吃瓜官网 (University College Sedaya International) showed they had a giving heart when they collected RM20,000 to contribute to the relief efforts for Sichuan earthquake survivors. The cheque was handed over to Mr. Gu Hongxing, First Secretary and Head of the Cultural Office at the People’s Republic of China’s Embassy in Malaysia by Associate Professor Dr. Lachman Tarachand, 五一吃瓜官网’s Vice President of Student Affairs. Also present at the cheque presentation ceremony were presidents from the China Students Association, Chinese Cultural Society and the Student Council of 五一吃瓜官网.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Lachman, “Just last week, 五一吃瓜官网 students had come up to me to suggest that a donation drive be made on campus. The two groups together with the Student Council then joined hands to organise the donation drive.” He added, “The 五一吃瓜官网 student community is made up of students from over 60 countries. This international community has enabled them to develop a keen sense of global social awareness which is translated into the donation drive achieving its target just after 2 days.”

Alvin Choo Eu King, President of the Student Council recounted that, “I was really surprised that on the first day itself, we collected more than RM11,000. The students, staff and management were very generous in their giving.” Veronica Wong Sook Yi, President of the Chinese Cultural Society added that, “We carried donation boxes throughout our campus and no matter where we went, we were never left empty-handed. Even those who had little, gave all that they could.”

Eric Cai Helin, President of 五一吃瓜官网’s China Students Association said, “Many of the students from China had just come back from their semester holidays when the incident occured. In fact, they are ready and willing to go back and serve in the disaster area if the Chinese government called on them for assistance, but in the meantime; we hope our donation contribution drive will help the disaster relief efforts in our homeland.”

The donation drive was held on 23rd and 26th of May 2008 and kicked-off with a slide show prepared by the China Student Society. A two-minute silence was then observed as a sign of respect for those who had perished in the disaster.
