五一吃瓜官网 University 11th Annual Public Health Campaign 2012 (Sub-event)


Perak, 8th January, 2012 - Students from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences had organised the 11thAnnual Public Health Campaign (sub-event) which was held in SMK Methodist (ACS) at Sitiawan, Perak.

The event was officiated by Associate Professor Dr. Yeong Siew Wei, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Ashley Ng Yoon Mooi, the principal of SMK Methodist (ACS) who graciously sponsored the venue as well as Ms Renee Au Chi Yan, the chairwoman of the 11th Public Health Campaign 2012.

Themed ‘Fit for Life, Let's Prevent Cancer', this charity event aims to promote and educate the public on disease prevention and health awareness on cancer as well as cardiovascular diseases. This could be done through regular medical check-ups as its importance was highlighted in the campaign. Hence, the free health screenings which include blood pressure tests, blood glucose tests, body fat tests and waist-to-hip ratio calculations. These tests are then followed by appropriate patient counselling from qualified pharmacists, doctors as well as students from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

In accordance to the theme, an exhibition was set up with visual aids as pharmacy students explained to the public on the intricacies of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, with its contributing factors, complications and possible preventions as part of raising health awareness. Apart from the interactive exhibition, a line-up of activities had been set to attract the crowd. First up was the line dance performance by the Senior Citizen Association of Sitiawan which proved to be a crowd pleaser. Other social activities include colouring and drawing competitions opened to children between the ages of 7 to 12 respectively. In conjunction with the campaign's objective, a health talk on breast cancer by Dr Wani from the National Cancer Society, was held and also proved to be a hit amongst the public as it provided priceless insights and knowledge from a professional viewpoint.

At the end of the day, the public did not go home empty handed and was presented with goodie bags and door gifts as a memento of their participation. Most importantly, however was the valuable knowledge as well as heightened health awareness gained by the public on cancer and cardiovascular diseases; a fulfilled cause in which the students of the Faculty of Pharmaceuticals Sciences would be proud to be associated with.
