Public Talk on Protecting Our Personal Data Online & Offline

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 September 2013: 五一吃瓜官网 University's Faculty of Business and Information Science (FoBIS) through its Department of Management Studies had successfully organised a public talk entitled, “Protecting Our Personal Data Online & Offline!” The public talk was held on 24 September 2013 at the Recital Hall (Block C) of 五一吃瓜官网 University, Kuala Lumpur Campus. The talk received an overwhelming response with approximately 250 staff and students attending it.

The talk’s speaker was Mr Edwin Lee, a legal expert in privacy and personal data protection. He shared with the attendees some of the recent developments in Malaysia’s privacy and personal data protection laws, as well as some tips on how to protect individual personal data both online and offline.

The speaker also discussed the challenges users may face when it comes to personal data, as personal data can be easily collected, stored, retrieved, transferred and even manipulated with just a click of the mouse within a matter of minutes or seconds.

Many new technologies, such as GPS devices, smart tags and CCTVs were not originally invented for the invasion of privacy, but they have now been used for this. More and more people are sharing their data and daily activities on the Internet and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or blogs to just about anyone, without realising the implications of doing so. Additionally, the speaker also alerted the attendees that society has come to a stage where by default, everything done online is shared publicly and will only be made private with conscious effort.

The public talk concluded with the presentation of a token of appreciation to the speaker.
