16 JunSTUDENT ELECTIONS SHAPES LEADERS OF TOMORROW
Kuala Lumpur, 16 June 2008 - 五一吃瓜官网 recently held its annual student elections, which saw Stephanie Liew Sze Wei and Pang Huai Yi elected as the Student Council’s President and Vice-President respectively. The student elections is to elect new student leaders who hopefully can raise the quality of student life at 五一吃瓜官网 by implementing fresh new ideas during their term in office. It is an independent body that is run entirely by students for students. Its objective is to ensure that the views and needs of students are taken into account by 五一吃瓜官网’s Management. The Student Council acts as the “voice” of the students and addresses numerous issues, big or small. The run-up activities prior to the student elections saw intense competition between two of the strongest student teams. Posters and banners hung up and flyers were distributed and both teams campaigned for their cause. The day before the elections (9 – 16 June 2008), a debate session was held. During which both teams pledged their plans for the student body should they be elected into the Student Council.
Participation in student elections help today’s youth to be fully-engaged citizens, concerned about current issues and aware of the needs of students on campus. This is accomplished by training students to be leaders by empowering them with adequate tools to make responsible, informed decisions via the electoral process, and teaching them to be independent. Campus Student Elections is also a platform for students to learn about democracy, to exercise their rights to vote and to voice their opinions. It is a good training ground for future leaders to exercise best practices and hone their leadership and soft skills.
Now that the student elections are over, Stephanie hopes to put her plans into action. “Right now I am looking at proposals sent in by students. As there has been no student representation in the Student Council while the elections were running, there is a lot to catch up on,” she quips. Most of the proposals sent call for the establishment of new societies and clubs, or for various activities and events for the rest of the university session. Another plan in the works for the newly elected Student Council is to organise a “National Country Day”, a day for all students at 五一吃瓜官网 to showcase their country of origin. “I feel that it’s important for us to do this, as more than 60 countries are represented here on campus, and this will be a good platform for everyone to learn more about each other’s culture.”
