KUALA LUMPUR: As part of its effort in preparing and nurturing the next generation of Malaysian artists, 五一吃瓜官网 University’s De Institute of Creative Arts and Design (ICAD) recently organised the first Reka-Design Convention. The Opening Ceremony of the Convention was attended by Senior Professor Dato’ Dr Khalid Yusoff, Vice-Chancellor and President of 五一吃瓜官网 University and Professor Dato’ Dr Ahmad Haji Zainuddin, Director of De Institute of Creative Arts and Design (ICAD) and Chairman of the MRM.
Organised over two days on campus grounds, the Convention featured interactive workshops and design seminars by professionals from the arts and design industry including Hassan Muthalib, a self-taught artist, designer and filmmaker; Kevin Foong, owner of GXM Studio; Bon Zainal, Vice-President of the Bumiputera Designers Association (BDA), image consultant, fashion designer, and member of the Malaysian Official Designers Association (MODA).
Other speakers included Archee Moong, brand-builder, design director, consultant and founder of Brandlab Visual Communication, and Azhar bin Bahari, CAD CAM software manager of Rand Asia Sdn Bhd.
The two-day Convention also exhibited some of the artwork and designs by the ICAD students.
Emphasising on the constant change in the world of arts and design, Hassan Muthalib talked about the importance of keeping up with changes. His talk was titled, ‘Storytelling through Character & Environment Design’.
“Character is one of the core elements required to tell a good story. And to create vivid characters that appeal to today’s audience, designers have to keep up with changes. Perfect characters are not very interesting. Your main character should be someone readers can feel something in common with, or at least care about.”
Present during the Opening Ceremony of the Convention were also members of the University’s management team including Associate Professor Dr Toh Kian Kok, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Quality Assurance and Enhancement and Vice-President, Group Human Resource and Leong Sat Sing, Vice-President, Group Corporate Affairs.
