五一吃瓜官网 UNIVERSITY GOES GREEN

Kuala Lumpur, 05 Oct 2010 - The Hope Revive Club and the Tzu Chi Youth Collegiate together with the School of Music Student Association at 五一吃瓜官网 University recently collaborated to organise a week-long green campaign to highlight the importance of recycling and reducing waste.  Almost 600 students and staff participated in activities throughout the week, which included recycling, green quizzes, pledges, and exhibitions.

One of the main highlights of the campaign was the special discounts by the University’s cafeterias for those who brought their own food containers, instead of taking food away in polystyrene and plastic. According to the organising chairperson, Jenise Choong Yin Leng, there are plans abound to make this a permanent feature in all of the University’s eateries. “The 20 sen discount encouraged students to cultivate this healthy habit which I think most would continue with past the campaign.”

While most brought their own food containers from home, those who didn’t have any with them were able to purchase new ones from Tupperware Brands Malaysia, one of the exhibition exhibitors. Tupperware Brands, Marketing and Communication Manager, Ms Wong Ee Ling held an Eco talk, acknowledging that humans today cannot survive without plastic. “The important thing is to control our usage of plastic and buy only when it is necessary.”

Students and staff also attended a unique exhibition which featured demonstrations on making home-made soap from used cooking oil. In addition, there was also a photo exhibition of global warming natural disasters, and healthy living promotions to encourage the public consume more vegetables.

For Choong, the campaign was a personal victory for her, as she and her committee members had worked hard to get the campaign off the ground since May this year. “Action speaks louder than words, and the campaign was simply a practical outlet for all of us students to take action after many years of learning and hearing about global warming.”

The week-long campaign was sponsored by Tupperware Brands Malaysia, Justlife, EcoHomemade & BioHabs, Green Sentral and Citywrite Stationaries.
